Sports Minister Gives Update On Policies And Bills

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Mustapha Ussif says two legislations and a policy are in the offing to enhance the country’s sporting activities.

Among them are the National Sports Policy, a legislative instrument and National Anti-doping Bill.

The Ministry is in the process of drafting a National Sports Policy which the sector Minister said would serve as the bedrock for all sporting and physical activities with the necessary collaborations for the necessary achievement of policy goals and outcomes.

According to Hon Ussif, a draft of the policy is available and awaiting finalization.

Legislative Instrument For Sports Act
Also, he said a draft legislative instrument for the Sports Act, 2016, ACT 934 is “earnestly” being worked on.

“Pre-laying for the draft LI has been done and is currently at the Attorney-General Department for finalization before final laying in Parliament,” he updated.

National Anti-doping Bill
Another important bill he highlighted was the National Anti-doping Bill which he said was necessitated by the country’s bid to host the 13th African Games next year.

“As part of preparations towards the hosting and organization of the 13th African Games, Accra 2023, the draft bill for the establishment of a National Anti-doping Agency has been prepared.”

According to him, a consultative meeting was held on 24th June 2022 to solicit views and opinions from stakeholders before drafting the bill.

“Currently, the draft is at the Attorney General’s Department for finalization,” he communicated.
