Ashanti Region Records 47,450 Road Injuries Annually

The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced that it will be clamping down on recalcitrant road users whose actions result in injuries and deaths on roads in the Region.

At a press briefing, DCOP David Adjem noted that plans put in place by REGSEC are meant to reduce road accidents in the region.

“Lately, the Regional Security Council has realised that indiscipline on our roads is the biggest menace in the Region. We lose a life everyday to road accident.

“Again, a minimum of thirteen persons are injured daily. If you do the mark, it means that per year, we are recording close to 400 deaths in road accidents. For the injured, it is thirteen times three hundred and sixty-five which is unacceptable.

“And so the Regional Security Council has directed the police to enforce all public regulations and cause the arrest of all persons who flout these regulations on our roads. Of course, the idea is to reduce the damage on our roads.

“All motorists in the region are therefore requested to respect the rules on the roads otherwise they will be arrested and prosecuted.”

He noted that his outfit will clamp down on those who engage in drunk-driving, overloading of vehicles, driving on the shoulder of the roads, driving or riding while using communication tools, riding without helmets reckless driving and disregard for road regulations.

According to DCOP Adjem, 95% of cases in the Accident Ward at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital were motorbike accidents.

He further advised road users to respect authorised sirens like ambulances and dignitaries.
